Many second, third, fourth (etc!) cousins intermarried. In tracking down the branch of one tree, there is a family with 4 daughters in the 1700's ... all 4 of them my many-times-great grandmothers. So from these 4, and their descendants, there are just their mother and father at the top at that point. This may seem strange to us these days, but it was probably quite common back then.
