Subject: [ROOTS-L] Administrivia: Welcome back ... to AOL, etc.

Rumor has it that AOL has stopped blocking messages from RootsWeb.
This has been going on for a week or two now.

There wasn't much point in posting this Administrivial note until now,
when the people impacted would be able to read it.

For the past several days, AOL (and its related domains, such as
Netscape/CS/WMConnect) has been refusing delivery of all (or at least
most) messages from RootsWeb. Initially, there were many bounces,
and you may have bounced off your other RootsWeb lists. (You may
have bounced off THIS list, but if so, you won't be seeing this
message. That, and I only saw one person bounce off of ROOTS-L, and
I'll be adding them back momentarily.)

Here's the important thing: once RootsWeb realized this was happening,
messages to AOL have been set aside and queued. So MOST of the messages
to you did NOT bounce. Instead, they'll be being delivered over the
next few (several?) days. (Er, I'm told there are 100,000 of them!
This could take awhile.)

Once that dust settles, if you're the obsessive type and want ALL the
digests, make a note of which are missing and follow the directions at
the top of each digest for receiving missing issues. Do wait a few
days, though, until the delivery of the old stuff dries up. No need to
overload the system further!

You can also read old messages at

Meanwhile, you were definitely missed, we're glad to have you
back, and NO, we didn't gossip about you while you were out of the
room. ;-)
