You might want to write to the list with your oldest known family members with the dates and locations and go from there -- back one generation at a time from what you know to what you don't know. Do be careful about details for living people, but it sounds as if you know some people to start with that are not living now. There is a database on line called Find USA that has some information on living people which might provide some information. You may know about people living in 1820 and 1930 who could be found in a census, but again for lookups you needs dates and locations. I do have some general research guidelines. Let me know if you would like me to send you an attachment of these guidelines.
