Many late 1800s and early 1900s immigrants living in NY city moved frequently because other tenement landlords offered one month's rent free. They also moved to be nearer to relatives as new family members came to our country or if possible to be into the same tenement.

Then as their fortunes improved they moved into better accommodations and sometimes stayed there. I have one family who has been at the same address for two consecutive censuses, and on the same street but with a different address another set of relatives.

And has been written by others to better improve their lot in life then and as we do today.

Joanie
