Subject: [ROOTS-L] Why Did They Move

More than likely it was because of free land. As the west gradually
opened up, people quite often moved in groups to the areas. Our
families did that ... moving from NY-WI-IL and VA-NC-IN-IA-KS-NE-CO
on westward to California. Most of them were farmers or as was the
case with my gr grandfather - lured to the Colorado gold mines.

As my dad used to say "the grass is always greener on the other side
of the fence" One of my ancestors deserted his 5 children after
their mother died and went from Iowa to the Colorado gold mines,
certain he'd strike it rich. He eventually died there at age 90
while hiking up a 12,000' mountain to check out one of his mines.
His children grew up, never really knowing their father, bitter that
he deserted them when they were mere babies, 9 mos. to 8 yrs. old.
He's buried in a pauper's grave in Gunnison CO.
