Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re:(Personal Respnses) was ROOTS-L Digest V06 #38
Sender: roots-in@roots-l.rootsweb.com

Supposing that this message was a response to the aborted effort of someone who had tried to send David a
personal (off-list) response to something, I have a suggestion.

David, no one on this list (well, at least me) will remember that you can't receive personal messages.

Shortly after I joined another list, there was a brouhaha because "everyone knows that Joe doesn't get
personal e-mail" -- well, I didn't know, and I'm sure neither did many other people, even if "Joe told us
a long time ago that . . . " and a similar story to yours. The subject, and "Joe" got so hostile that I,
and I'm sure others, will never try to help him again.

So, to David, and everyone else on this list:

When responding to a message I usually hit "reply to all", or "reply to sender", depending on whether the
message is of universal interest or of interest only to one person. For example, if the question has to do
with "how to do something" I may reply to the whole list, but if it is "can you find Joe Shmoe in the 1910
census. . " I will reply only to the person asking the question.

Anytime you are asking a question, or saying something that will likely elicit a personal response, you
should add the information that you do not accept personal e-mails, therefore request that responses be
sent to the list. Save you, and the sender much time and grief.

|To those of you who have a problem with our spam blocking:
|
|Thanks for being understanding and taking the time to do that
|silly request to be put on a list.
|
|Last fall, I was suspended from the net because I had gotten a
|virus/worm or whatever the hell it is that was using my email
|address to send out spam of an especially unwanted variety.
|
|I got several warnings. I tried and tried to get rid of it.
|I thought my computer friend had fixed it. It kept on showing
|up. it took a lot of time and expertise to finally erase it.
|I want whatever protection earthlink.com would like me to
|have. I don't want to get thrown off the net again.
|
|So please remember, we are not being snooty and unpleasant.
|We're doing what's necessary.
|
|Can you go the extra mile with us? Thanks, and aloha from Hawaii.
