Subject: [ROOTS-L] RE: Subject - an obituary

P.,

My experience in looking up obituaries in the Los Angeles Times may give you a clue as to the problem you're having.

The online databases for current newspapers usually don't carry the death notices/obituaries. I have to go to my local library that carries microfilm of the "whole" newspaper. Online databases usually only include prominent people's "death notices" (artists, actors, actresses, politicians, etc.) Some of the databases are not carrying "paid notices", which includes classified sections and death notices. You might need to have a manual look-up of your obituary. I recommend that you find a volunteer in Indiana to look up the obit for you. You may find a volunteer at the "Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness" website: http://www.raogk.org/

It is amazing that I can look up online database for the Los Angeles Times obituaries from 1881 - 1985 because the whole paper has been placed in the database; but after 1985 the database only carries certain parts of the newspaper. I believe that is the problem you're having. Depends on how the newspaper was archived.

Hope this gives you some insight!

Cindy

Subject: an obituary

I have checked the library in Tucson, Arizona and they stated that my cousin's obit supposedly ran in the Lebanon reporter in Indiana and the State genealogy do these kind of lookups all the time and they found nothing, Katherine R. Genders passed away in the Hospital in Tucson, Arizona on 02 June 2002 and I have been told that they might have it at the Arizona Historical Society. The library also told me that it ran in the Tucson Daily Star but they cannot seem to find it. What is going on with obits lately? The Database told where this obit is and no one can seem to find it. Any help would be deeply appreciated.
