You should not have any sin on your conscience. If you do, you should confess your sins. Confession is not necessary before each mass, however. You must believe that the host dispensed at the mass is an actual connection to the body of Christ. It's not simply a wafer - just as the wine is actually the connection to the blood of Christ. You should have nothing to eat or drink one hour before communtion.
