Subject: [ROOTS-L] CHRIST HRONOPOLAS/VAN CALLAS/CHARLES CALIVAS/PETE SELENAS/PAUL ODLE

  Fifty-Three Years Ago

Fifty Three Years ago today on January 23, 1953 my life as I know it had changed forever. I was an Airman second class (Corporal) in the US Air Force stationed at Vance AFB, Enid, Garfield County, Oklahoma. For you see my wife HELEN MARGARET CALIVAS was in labor with our first child. Another thing happened that day I had to go pick up my first pair of glasses at Dr. HERBERT SHIELDS office located in the Broadway tower. I raced back home. I do not remember who took us to the base Hospital, as we did not have a car. I know that ART ROMALLO loaned me his car the next day. At 7:30 p.m, that was a Friday night my wife delivered a 7 ½ pound baby boy. We named him Paul Leroy Odle, Jr. My wife was of GREEK descent so we called our baby TYKI (meaning repete, Junior.)

This was the first Grandchild on both sides of the family so Tyki’s birth was an important event, plus he was a male child which is rare in GREEK families.

The next night the weeklong celebration of my “BIG GREEK BABY BOY” started at VAN and ERNESTINE CALLAS house. All of the GREEK FAMILIES in Enid were there at the CALLAS’ for dinner and Greek dancing. The CHRIST HRONOPULOS, GEORGE HRONOPULOS, CHARLES CALIVAS, PETE SELINAS, VAN CALLAS, JIMMY WILSON’S, TED CONSTANT’S, PAUL OUTHIER and JACK DAVIS FAMILY’S and many more.

All of the older GREEK MEN like my father-in-law CHARLIE CALIVAS, VAN CALLAS, CHRIST HRONOPULOS, GEORGE HRONOPULOS and PETE SELINAS were dancing Greek folk dances with silver dollars pasted on their fore head. The Greek wine, the roasted lamb and the feta cheese flow around the room with gusto! The more Krasee (Greek Wine) they drank, and the more houched the old men got the more silver dollars you saw pasted to their fore heads. The rest of the week the celebration went on at my father-in-laws business CHARLIES BAR-B-QUE AND BEER GARDENS. DAD CALIVAS GAVE BEER AWAY ALL WEEK TO HIS CUSTOMERS. Everyone was excited about the new baby. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL JR.
