Jefferson Democrat
Hillsboro, Jefferson County, Missouri

WEDNESDAY, 5 MARCH 1884

ORDER OF PUBLICATION - STATE OF MISSOURI - County of Jefferson - In the
Circuit court of Jefferson County, to May term, 1884, in vacation, February 13,
1884.
The State of Missouri, at the relation and to the --- --- --- --- the
revenue of Jefferson County, in the State of Missouri, Plaintiff, vs ... Louis
LAUGEN, Ezra CADWALLADER, Caroline CADWALLADER, Belinda CADWALLADER and Mary
E. CADWALLADER, defendants.
At this day comes the plaintiff herein by its attorney, W.H.H. THOMAS,
and files its petition and affidavit of Jacob N. DOUGLAS, alleging among other
things that defendants, Louis LANGEN, Ezra CADWALLADER, Caroline CADWALLADER,
Belinda CADWALLADER and Mary E. CADWALLADER, are non-residents of the State
of Missouri:
Whereupon it is ordered by the clerk that said defendants be notified
by publication that plaintiff has commenced a suit against them in this court,
the object and general nature of which is to obtain judgment for the sum of
$20.15, on account of a back-tax bill made out by said collector of the revenue
of said county of Jefferson, under an act providing for the collection of
delinquent taxes on real estate forfeited to the State, approved April 12, 1877,
being the amount of taxes due for the years 1875, 1876, 1877, 1878, 1879, 1880,
1881 and 1882, on the following described real estate, situate in said county
and State, to-wit:
Beginning on the north line of section 25 in township 41, range 5 east,
south 83 degrees and 33 minutes east 9.66 chains from the northwest corner of
said section; thence south 15 minutes east 12.44 chains to the middle of
Joachim creek; thence south 83 degrees east 11.24 chains; thence north 15 minutes
west 12.73 chains; thence north 83 degrees and 33 minutes west 7.24 chains to
the place of beginning, containing 13 90-100 acres; that the object of said
suit is to obtain judgment for said sum, as aforesaid, and to enforce the lien
of the State against said real estate for said taxes, interest thereon,
commissions and costs of suit; And that unless the said Louisa LAUGEN, Ezra
CADWALLADER, Caroline CADWALLADER, Belinda CADWALLADER and Mary E. CADWALLADER, shall
be and appear at this court, at the next term thereof, to be begun and holden
at the courthouse in the town of Hillsboro, in said county, on the second
Monday of May next, and on or before the sixth day of said term, if the term shall
so long continue - and if not, then on or before the last day of said term -
answer or plead to the petition in said cause, the same will be taken as
confessed and judgment will be rendered accordingly.
And it is further ordered that a copy hereof be published, according to
law, in the Jefferson Democrat, a newspaper printed and published in said
County and State. C. Tho. HORINE, Circuit Clerk.
A true copy from the record. Witness my hand and the seal of the
Circuit court of Jefferson County, this 18th day of February, 1884. C. Tho.
HORINE, Circuit Clerk. February 27, 1884.

Erasmus DICKEMANN of Dry Creek died last Sunday.

Noble IRWIN(?), of Plattin township, an excellent Christian gentleman, died
last Sunday.

Lawrence McCORMACK is at our house sick with pneumonia. We hope he may be up
again in a few days.

On the 2nd ult, Martha S., wife of Albert LANHAM of Sandy, died, aged 24
years, 8 months and 21 days.

Miss Bunnie, daughter of Judge Joseph WILLIAMS, has been quite ill the past
week from an affliction of the throat.

February 24th, John PITZ, one of the oldest residents of Jefferson County,
died upwards of 70 years of age. He died near Mehlville, St. Louis County,
having moved there a few years ago.

Heinrich BECKER of Maxville, aged 69 years and 3 months, died of remittent
fever on the 24th of February. He was an old resident of this county, and came
here November 7, 1856. His funeral was largely attended.

CIRCUIT COURT - James STRICKLAND was tried on indictment charging him with
murdering Thos. DAVIS, and the jury only required about 15 minutes in which to
agree on a verdict of not guilty. The defendant denied all knowledge of the
crime and the State relied on the statement of deceased for conviction, and the
jury had good cause for doubting the truth of said statement. The verdict was
returned late Friday evening, two of the main speeches having been made that
evening after supper, and the court at once adjourned, and all hands - except
Judge and Prosecuting Attorney - proceeded to ratify. Several of the middle
hours of the night were spent hilariously, but good humoredly, at the hardware
establishments in town. We have only heard two persons express
dissatisfaction with the verdict and they did not hear the evidence.
