Subject: [ROOTS-L] Census Records

Every census is published to the public after 72 years have elapsed from the
time the census was taken. The 1930 was just released in 2002. In 2012 the
1940 census will be released and in 2022 the 1850 and each ten years down
the road. Many of us won't be here when the census returns that we create are
going to be published. The census returns that our future genealogists will
be facing is going to be disappointing, at least as far as I can tell.

Until the returns are issued to the public, there will not be any access to
the 1940 census or later ones except if you personally need or have reason to
view what you submitted to the Census Bureau. Until then, no one has access
to any census returns and that includes Ancestry, Heritage Quest or the
National Archives!

The reason I say this is because the 1980 census that I filled out was
nothing more than completing a bunch of bubble questions. Putting families
together from these census is going to be rather difficult. Not to mention a lot
of people are still paranoid about government getting inside our business!
The 2000 census was more of the same. I don't remember completing a census
return. I think I was living with a boyfriend at the time and he might have
only filled it out for himself and omitted me as being a member of his
household. The 1970 census I was in Europe and don't remember being asked to
complete one. So, for anyone looking for me, they are going to have to follow me
all over the world and all over the US as I moved around for the last 30 years!
