Subject: [ROOTS-L] Wakesfos/Weckfus/Vickfoos/, Bedford Co., PA

Various spellings were found for this family in each census for Bedford Co.,
PA, 1850-1860-1870-1880--1900.
Bible entries found in old German Bible (Source: "Bedford County Archives,
Volume II" edited by James Biser Whisker, Ph.D. Apollo: Closson Press,
1985, page 42.") listed the eldest
Joseph Weckfus, born 12/29/1817 Born in Bayern/Bavaria, as were his wife
and oldest children.
His wife, Elizabeth Daubert or Dibert, born 3/9/1822. She had an
illegitimate daughter, Susanna Bittle or Biddle, born 12/27/1844.

Katarina, born 8/6/1849. She is not listed as a child but a note said her
father died in 1879, which leads me to believe she may have been a child. On
the 1850 census a one year old girl was named Mary C. Then again, father
Joseph was found on the 1880 census.

George, born 130/1851.
John, born 4/10/1854.
Jossey (Josiah on later censuses), male, born 3/2/1857.
Anna Maria. bprm 0/24/1859.
Jacob, born 2/7/1863.
Maria Martha, 11/11/1867.

Another entry has Kathe Louiise, born 1869. But also has the entry "The
Mother died June 22d, 1861"...which means she was probably a grandchild, not a
child of Elizabeth Weckfus.
Or Joseph had a second wife.

Edward was born October 1881.
And then two entries on MAEIR, George and Joseph, both with dates born in
1862.

They lived in West Providence Twp., Bedford Co., PA.

I found three other Weckfus/many spellings on censuses. George, who was
probably father to the others, and two siblings for Joseph: Condrad and
Madeline.

George was born about 1780 in Wurttemberg, Germany.
His wife was Mary C., born about 1790 in Wurttemberg.
Matilda, daughter, was with them, born about 1824 in Wurttemberg.

Not too far away was the Joseph Weckfus family and near that family was the
Conrad Weckfus family. I believe from their dates that Joseph, Matilda, and
Conrad were siblings.

My interest in this family is John Weckfus. According to family stories
told to me by those who knew my great grandmother, Elizabeth Salone Toms Moore,
John was her first husband.
She had a child by him, John, whose name was spelled WAKEFIELD on the 1880
census.

Story was she left "that old German" when she was pregnant, crossed the
Laurel Ridge Mountains into Westmoreland Co. where she met James B. Moore. He
took her in to care for his many motherless children and apparently after the
elder John died in 1878, she married James in 1879 and they were my great
grandparents. The child, James Wakefield/Wakfos was killed by a train when he
was 11 or so.
(Source: Civil War widow's pension application where she listed her first
marriage and his death prior to marriage to James Moore, the veteran.)

Only problem, John Weckfus (or Wakefos, she named him) was found on the 1880
and 1900 census in Bedford with a wife and children.

Is anyone researching this family? Would anyone like more information on
them?
