Subject: [ROOTS-L] New York State Vital Records

I am a New York State native from Jefferson Co. Absolutely, Positively, there were no BMDs required by law prior to 1880.

The Syracuse, Onondaga Co., and Rochester, Monroe Co., NY have microfiche copies of BMDS starting with 1880, which I have used for my research.

Margaret Scheffler (sp ?) from Syracuse would you please enter your information for this verification.

In going to the Delaware Co. website, I found that the website has changed drastically in its format. There had been a posting there re New York State records in great detail.

This is in regards to your message that you posted to the RootsWeb list,
ROOTS-L Digest V06 #19.
I believe that the records were required back then. The problem with
getting these records is actually that there was a fire around this time
that destroyed all the records for the state. Just so you know.
Thanks.
Kevin

There were no required birth, marriage, or death records until 1880.
In the first couple of years not all locations were in compliance.
Until then, one had to rely on church records.

I tried getting a church record at the Baptist Church in Adams
Center,Jefferson Co., NY where an ancestor was a deacon of the church.
No records were there for the era around 1850.
