Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: military service numbers

 I enlisted in the US Army in October 1956 and was given an "RA"  serial
number, so this was some years before Vietnam.  The numbering system for
serial numbers also were not according to enlistment year.  We also had
brown shoes and "Ike"  jackets, but before I got out in Sept. 1959 the Army
was in the process of converting over to black shoes and the long green
Class "A" coat.  Fortunately they did not make us change uniforms if we had
less than a year of duty left.
