My husband was in the Army at the end of WWII . He has 2 discharges. He was drafted, took training to become cook and baker, was promoted to Staff Sgt. when he got orders to go to Germany, his C O told him if he took discharge and re-enlisted in regular army, he could stay there, at Camp Beale Army Base at Marysville, Ca. The C. O. said the boys coming home had to eat too. and since Beale was a demarcation center, they would be coming there. So he took the discharge and was confined to base for 24 hours, until he could enlist again.. his number stayed the same. on one of his papers noting his promotion it lists his # with RA in front of the #.
