Subject: [ROOTS-L] WW II Serial Numbers

I was almost "too young" to serve in WW II, but managed it anyway. I
served in three different categories (later) but kept the same serial
# the entire time, an 8 digit number without any letters. In early
1944 I enlisted, at age 17, in the ASTP, the Army Specialized
Training Program. Since I was 17 I was technically in the Reserves,
but as I was also under military law, with a Commanding Officer and
First Sgt, I was on active service. We were sent to several colleges
studying Civil Engineering, presumably learning things useful to the
Army, but also I believe a secondary task was to help keep the
universities open. When I became 18, I went to Basic Training and
then back to college for six more months, after which I was assigned
to a group testing new equipment for the Army to be sure it was
functional. After VJ day people were being discharged based on the
number of "points" they had earned, one for each month in the US, two
for each month outside the US, five for each campaign medal, and I
believe 10 for each Medal (Purple Heart, Silver Star, etc). Clearly I
was a long way from discharge. At this time the Army offered a one
year enlistment with temptation of advancement in rank and a 30 day
furlough. I took it. So I have been in the Army of United States, and
the United States Army, during and after a "war", while a reserve and
regular, all on active duty, with the same 8 number serial number
without letters`. Bob Hill
