Subject: [ROOTS-L] Military Service numbers

At least during the Korean war, Army enlistees were given an "RA"
number, which we understood to mean
"regular army" and draftees were assigned a "US" number. The first
number in the US series meant the army
district from which drafted (as Fifth Army). the second and third
numbers were the year entered service and the last four numbers
the sequence in which entered service. The numbers were assigned at
entry into the service.
That info may be of use in some use genealogical searches.
