Subject: [ROOTS-L] Memories 'Round The Mill

  I Remember Snyder¡¯s

It was way back in 1989 when I decided to move back ¡®round the Mill town of Yukon, Oklahoma where I was born and raised. I had lived many places during the past 45 years. I expected to known everyone in town as I did before I left. But that was not to be for you see the tiny Mill town population 1200 had grown to be a big City of over 25,000 people. The only people I recognized where from the northern part of Oklahoma. When I first moved back home I looked at everyone I passed and never recognized anyone.

Right away I missed all of the business that were here when I was growing up. I missed a lot of people that I loved that had gone on to Glory long ago. And I missed Grocery Shopping at United Supper Markets in Enid where I knew where everything was located. That is when I become involved into a long love a fair with SNYDER¡¯S SUPPER MARKET and DELI. I really loved Snyder¡¯s deli where you had a choice of four different delicious dinners daily.

The delightful cook of all those wonderful meals was FREDRICKA BELISLE the baby sister to an old kid PHILLIP BELISLE that was a classmate all though school. My mother HAZEL HOLLIDAY ODLE had gone to High School in El Reno with their mother. I use to purchase four different take out dinners every time I was in Snyder¡¯s. I would eat one freeze the other three for latter meals that I heated for seven minuets in the microwave.

When I moved back to Yukon in 1989 I weight 195 pounds. After eating Fredricka¡¯s good cooking at Snyder¡¯s Deli it was not long before I weight 295. That was when I decided to go on the Snyder¡¯s diet. I invented the ¡°SNYDER DIET.¡± The first month of the Snyder Diet I would buy one meal and divide it in half, only eating half of the meal and putting the other half in the freezer for a future meal. I lost 30 pounds the first month. After the first month I divided the meals in thirds. I lost 100 pounds in six months. Unfortunately in a few months after I stopped dieting I gained it all back. The Deli was also the spot where everyone met for coffee. It was not long before I was able to recognize people that I had not seen in 45 years and I also made lots of new friends.

I miss the management and employees of Snyder¡¯s Supper Market they were all friendly, kind and helpful and who could not forget Fred and Emiel. I loved their meat counter and fresh vegetables. You could cash checks, buy postage stamps, and drop off your dry cleaning all in one place. And if you were moving you could always find empty boxes to pack your things.

If you happened to see Jim Snyder in the store or anywhere he always had a big smile and a warm greeting for you. Yukon has always had warm friendly helpful people. Some say it is the Yukon water that makes folks so nice in Yukon. I am so happy and proud that I was able to live 14 years in Yukon around the Mill in my senior years. And I am happy to say I was a big fan of Snyder¡¯s Deli and Fredricka Belisle/Simmons Cooking.
