I am not a military 'expert' but both my husband and son have many years of 
military service.  I believe to join any branch of the military you are 
required to 'enlist' in that service unless you join by receiving a 
commission as an officer.  Even those that are drafted were still  required 
to enlist papers, {I think}.

Maybe this will help if there are not too many maybes.
