Subject: [ROOTS-L] Looking for Weissenfels NY connections 1700-1850

Looking for any connections to Frederick Von Weissenfels (1728-1806, b. Ebling, Prussia, d. New Orleans, LA) who was a Lt. Col. of New York Levies during the American Revolution. After serving in the Prussian and British Armies, he settled in Dutchess Co., NY, about 1763, with his wife the former 

Mary Shumur, 1735-1776, (daughter of Samuel Shumur, nyc merchant 1710-1736, and Catherine Cazalet, 1717-1751). They were married Dec. 16, 1756 in Trinity Church NYC. He served fathfully thoughout the Revolution, but lost everything and died poor. For a time after the war, he operated a ferry service between Rye, NY and Oyster Bay, LI, NY. After 1800 he moved to Louisiana. 

Their children were
 
George Peter (1764-1798 Dutch Reform Church, NY) married Maria Leaycraft Nov. 16, 1791 in the Dutch Reform Church, NYC. Their child was Elizabeth Weissenfels (1793-1859) married Capt. William Thomas. The decendants of George Peter settled in Daviees Co., KY, where some live today. George served with his father in the Revolution as a Lt. Today the Fifer George Peter Weissenfels organization is named in his honor.

Charles Frederick (abt. 1765-1800) married Rhoda Salter. Their children were Charles T., Sarah Charlotte (married Abraham Redwood Ellery) and Anna Marie. Charles Served with his father in the Revolution as a Capt.

Secondly Frerderick Weissenfels married Elizabeth Williams (abt. 1750-?) in the Reformed Dutch Church, New Hackensack, Dutchess Co., NY, on Feb. 26, 1777. 

Their child was Harriet or Helen Weissenfels (1779-1855), married John Baker Martin (abt. 1775- d. bet. 1822-1855), April 5, 1798, Christ Church, Philadephia, PA. She is buried near Nortre Dame, South Bend, Indiana. 

John Martin Baker served as a minor official in the foreign service in the Caribbean after his father-in-law requested a position for him in a letter to James Madison or Monroe.Their children were Louis/Lewis Baker, Lucy C. Baker, Mary A. Baker.
