Subject: [ROOTS-L] Old cemeteries

Linda Cox
I have found myself in much the same situation as you trying to identify graves in an old cemetery. After several years of searching, I have been able to identify several persons buried in this cemetery. Even though I cannot determine the exact spot of their grave, I do know that they are buried in that cemetery.
My sources are:

#1. READ THE OLD NEWSPAPERS for that area. YES, this is very time consuming but worth every minute spent especially if the local newspaper had correspondents in different areas of the county that sent in the news from their neighborhood. In my case, our newspaper would give a free subscription to any one that would write weekly articles containing news of interest to readers about the "goings on" in their neighborhood. Well one of the "goings on" of interest were deaths. Sometimes I find a nice obit but most of the time I find only a sentence or two. An example might be "Lum Flippo quietly passed away Sunday morning. Interment was made in the Enon Cemetery." Another one is "The infant child of A. Goodnight died and was buried in the Enon cemetery Tuesday." I can determine the death date from the date of the newspaper.
I have been able to add several names to my cemetery enumeration through reading the old newspapers. At our local genealogy library, they have the newspapers on microfilm beginning with 1892 of the Green Forest Tribune, Carroll County, AR.

#2. I correspond with other genealogist that are researching families that lived in the area of this cemetery. Sometimes they have information such as "great aunt Molly told me that her cousin had a baby and they buried it beside Grandma Moses." Well, knowing that Grandma Moses was buried in this cemetery because she has a tombstone, gives me another burial for my Enon cemetery enumeration.

#3. I "hang out" at this cemetery over Memorial weekend making myself readily available to accept donations to help pay for the mowing. I always ask what families they are related to and what graves they decorate and I ALWAYS ask if they know of others persons buried there with unmarked graves. Almost every year, I visit with someone different and usually get a bit of new information.

#4. I talk (mostly ask questions) to anyone that mentions this cemetery whether they are "old-timers", genealogist, neighbors etc. Yes, I am a nosey busy- body when it comes to the Enon Cemetery, Carroll County, AR.

I think you will find that there is no easy way to determine the burials in your cemetery and that there is probably no plot map or probably never was one. Just consider it a life long mission. What you find now will surely help someone in the future.
Hope some of this helps.
