My doubts about your friend's statement! Perhaps she does not know all
the things available and how to use them, or she does not have the patience
to follow in a systematic pattern. Not knowing where your friend is
located --- nor you --- there is no way for us to ask if she or you have
used a specific repository or not -- or to suggest a special collection,
etc. to you. (Folks, my soapbox, but please - after your name if you'll
give your town & state - and your county unless your town is well known - it
helps us to help you). Of course, there may not be a really good,
comprehensive genealogy collection nearby but I'll bet that somewhere near
there is a library with some genealogy, certainly local history, etc. And
there is always the Internet for starters (and the Internet does NOT take
the place of 'research.')

I suspect that a lot of our Readers out here would be interested in more
than just the surname SPANOS ... possibly spelled slightly different in
various records... if for no other reason that to test our own skill.
Let's see what really can be found out there! What can your friend tell
us? Without going into a lesson in basic genealogy, ask her to give us a
starting point .... a person she can document (grandparents, perhaps) with
a name, birth date and where, death date and where, marriage date and where
with spouse's name, etc. And did she find them on a census record? If so,
which one?
