Part II

WEDNESDAY, 20 FEBRUARY 1884

John SMYTH died at his residence, near Pevely, on the 28th ultimo. He leaves
a family, and many relatives and friends, to mourn his loss.

Frank BOUGHTON will have to throw the meats he sells in future upon the
scales with a little more force, in order to produce more weight. Another boy to
clothe and feed since last Wednesday.

Smith PATTON's two-year old daughter, Virgie, received for a birthday present
a little sister, on the 11th inst. Smith expects to be very popular with
young men in the future.

C.S. ALLRED of Paris, Texas, on renewing his subscription to the J.D.,
informs us that George McMULLIN is now at that place; also that Mrs. T.L. McCORMACK,
whois there on a visit, will return home the last of this month.

I have wondered somewhat at George GIVENS' industry this Winter, and his
living in such a large house, but now I am not at all surprised, as his wife
presented him recently with a 9 1/2 pound by and a 7 1/2 pound girl A.
CALLAHAN.

Last Friday night, at Crystal City, Alec MURDOCH received a fatal stab from
Wesley RENFRO, colored. The two men were at work in the casting hall of the
glass works, when MURDOCH got to plaguing RENFRO about a girl. RENFRO became
angry and called MURDOCH a s-- of a b--- MURDOCH struck him whereupon he pulled
out a knife and gave MURDOCH a cut across the abdomen, a gash three inches in
length penetrating the abdominal cavity. Drs. TAYLOR and BRUCE think there is
no chance of the man's recovery. RENFRO was arrested and, waiving an
examination, was brought to jail by Constable SWINK.

DIED -(Written and published by members of the Pevely Sunday school, of which
the deceased was a member for years.)
Again has death entered our ranks and chosen one of the best and
loveliest of our little band. In the death of Mary V. BAKER, we have lost a noble
and gifted helper and worker in our Sunday school. Though not with us for the
past eight years, yet, whenever she was at home, her place in the Sunday school
was always filled. She has often said that she had never attended a Sunday
school that she loved like ours. Gifted by nature with a mild, gentle and
loving character, which endeared her to all who came in contact with her, she will
be missed in all the circles of life in which she moved. We deeply feel our
loss, but cannot mourn her as dead - only removed to a better sphere. "Our
loss is her gain" and her pure Christian life is a beacon to light us on our way
to endless joy.
