Subject: [ROOTS-L] When I started Researching my family

I started researching my children's genealogy about Ten years ago. I told
them I wanted to see if they were siblings and cousins. I was married twice and
each husband was named Stephen Shockey. My first Stephen and I had one
daughter together before he died from Leukemia. I met my second husband when people
thought he had died and sent his father sympathy cards. One of his friends
called me by mistake and told me that he needed to talk to him and who the
heck was I. I told him I was Steve's wife and he said he didn't know he had a
wife. I told him he had a wife and a small child. He snarled back at me that he
had just seen him 3 weeks ago and that he did NOT have a wife, he just
didn't say it that nicely <g>.

I told him that if he has seen him 3 weeks ago it was an act of God because
he had died Five weeks ago.

The next night my doorbell rang and a young man was standing there saying
his name was Stephen Shockey. I immediately locked the screen door and told him
he was crazy. He swore that he was not crazy and held up his military ID and
driver's license to prove he was who he said he was. Come to find out our
father's knew each other and had been carpenter's in the same local and we had
the same family doctor growing up while living on opposite sides of town. We
talked for hours and then within a few months were dating and then in over two
years we were married and had three children together. (We are still
happily married 31 years later.)

Once the kids were nearly grown and the last one was in High School I
decided to trace both husband's lines to see if there was a connection. I found out
right away that nearly everyone who's surname was spelled like ours was
related since the German surname of Schacke had been "Americanized" with the
original ancestor who came to America in the early 1700s. To my knowlege he was
the only Schake who's surname was spelled that way after coming to America.
After nearly two year of research I was able to prove that my first husband
descended from the orignal ancestors 5th son while my second husband descended
from his 2nd son. So my children really were cousins 9 times removed and
siblings. How strange is that?

Through genealogy we were able to get pictures from Unknown cousins of my
second husbands' grand parents and great-grandparents. What a generous thing to
share those with us. You seem to meet the nicest people on earth doing
genealogy. Hope my story brings a smile to your face and maybe a chuckle or two.
