Subject: [ROOTS-L] Starting the search!

I was just a youngster when I started looking for my ancestors....if you consider a second childhood as "young!" When I was in my mid-sixties, my aunt asked me if I had a good photo of my grandmother that she could borrow to make copies for all her children. I had inherited a trunk filled with photos and family papers from my parents, and when I searched for a good pic of Grandma, I ran across hundreds of other old, old, photos....and sorry to say, most of them were not identified.
I decided to try to rectify that situation so that my own children would not run into the same problem. Now, as I settle into my 70's, I have successfully identified many of them, but regretfully most are, and always will be, unknowns.
Researching my ancestors turned out to be such a windfall of fantastic information and such a delightful way to spend my time that I have completed a book about my father's family and am currently working on my husband's as well as my mother's.
You can be delightfully surprised by the heroic as well as the cowardly; the memorable as well as the not too impressive; and the lovable as well as the cantankerous people in your lineage.
Thank God for all those helpful genealogists. They are great people!
I cannot think of a better way to spend my senior years, but I wish I had started much earlier.
Shirley Love
