Subject: [ROOTS-L] James Webb and wife Ellen Quirk

According to his obituary, Capt. James Webb (my great great grandfather) was born in England, Nov. 25, 1807 and came over to New York about 1830. He had been a captain of seagoing vessels for 23 years, been in California during the '49 gold rush for 3 years, and moved to Winnebago County, Illinois in 1853. The family moved to Lincoln County, Kansas in 1880. He married Ellen in NewYork. Apparently he farmed after moving from New York.

My questions are: Would he have captained different ships or would he have been a captain of only one ship? He probably was naturalized in New York as I have found what I think is his family there. Would he have initially entered the States differently than the usual immigrant? How about after the first visit? Is there a way to tell if his ships carried passengers? Up to now all of my ancestors have mostly been farmers. This is a bit different!

Thanks for any help. emschmidt@cableone.net
