Subject: [ROOTS-L] How old was I

In 1999, my much younger sister and I (age 72) started to look for my mother's grandmother. Her mother had told the family only that she (Mom's mother) had been raised by her father's mother. We knew when and where Grandma's father had died and that they had been estranged (his brief obituary had stated his only living relative was his sister--that was incorrect). Grandma and her family had lived in north central Kansas most of her married life, but we knew when and where she had been born in Hardin County, Iowa in 1878. In 1970 my mother was with me when we had driven through Hardin County and we ended up finding a second cousin of Mom's who gave me the names of my great grandfather's siblings and his father. Great Grandpa had not been an only child after all. Because of work and family, there was no time to check out the names, but I kept the list.

>From the names of the siblings, we have found descendants of my great grandfather's two oldest brothers who do have some family info. Through two genealogical trips to Iowa, we have found the name of my mother's grandmother and the names of Grandma's one full sibling and 8 half siblings. Grandma wasn't an only child, either. And she had known the whereabouts of her mother and the family but had chosen not to divulge that info to her own family. Her parents had been divorced and she had gone to grandmother when she was ca. 10 years old.

At age 98, my mother was truly grateful to find her grandmother. However, Mother's great grandfather (the husband of Grandma's grandmother that raised her) is another matter. We know that my gggrandfather, Gabriel Harrison Horton, was born ca. 1830 probably in Orange County, New York. Some of the siblings' info has left a record that Gabriel's father was Joheil (Jeheil?) and I would like to connect him to Jehiel Horton who was a son of Elihu and Johanna Coleman Horton, but there is a brick wall. (Our Jehiel was born ca. 1792 as was the son of Elihu.) We don't even know whether Jehiel was the father of Gabriel but we suspect so. What we do know is that Jehiel was the grandfather of Mother's grandmother (the one that we had to find), and we suspect that Mother's grandparents were first cousins--but a brick wall. We don't know where or when Gabriel died as he disappeared after an argument with his children ca. 1900. We certainly could use some answers--does anyone out !
there have any suggestions? Thanks. Ella Mae Schmidt emschmidt@cableone.net
