Subject: [ROOTS-L] How/when did I get into genealogy

I think I have a rather unique start to my genealogy passion.
Although I have always been fascinated by history, I never thought about how
my family fit into it.
However in 1987 I bought a house in Maple Grove, MN. Shortly thereafter my
mother's aunt died and I by chance I saw her death certificate when it was
mailed to my mother. On it I noted that her father was listed as having been
born on Cedar Island Lake in Maple Grove. That lake was less than 1/2 mile
from my home.
I asked my mother's uncle where on Cedar Island Lake his father was born,
and he told me on the south shore, and I took him to the lake so he could show
me the location of the house, and where his grandfather's land was. To my
surprise he was pointing in the direction of my home.
I got out my abstract and discovered that my house was built on land that
had belonged to my great great grandfather. Suddenly I wanted to know more
about this family and how we came to be where we were, and I was hooked.
I have now traced that family line back to Germany, and other family lines
back to colonial New England, including John Alden and Priscilla Mullins.
I also discovered that Parker's Lake in Plymouth, MN (where I currently
live) was founded by another great great grandfather, and his siblings, who were
the first settlers to Plymouth, MN in 1854. That same family goes back to
Massachusetts in 1634.

So I am having a great time learning about my ancestors and the cities where
my family has lived for generations.

Jo Hogle
