Subject: [ROOTS-L] Historic Cemetery

Thanks to everyone who has offered their valuable advice for locating the property owner of the abandoned Gilder's Creek Cemetery in Newberry County, South Carolina.

Regarding the comments of the list member who wrote to say that in most cases cemeteries are not considered for inclusion on (but rather are EXCLUDED from) the National Register of Historic Places, please see the site the government has on the web regarding such nominations:
  http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/publications/bulletins/nrb41/

It's true that there are stringent requirements for a cemetery to fit the criteria, and the first step is to submit an initial assessment form to determine if the property does indeed qualify for the nomination process. In order to even submit the paperwork for the initial assessment I must know who owns the property.

I believe this particular cemetery meets the criteria as set forth in the above publication. Time will tell. I have already researched almost all those known to be buried there; they are the original Ulster Scot settlers to the area, including three Revolutionary War soldiers, one of whom has a considerable amount of historical information regarding his life and activities as an American patriot. I have already done volumes of ground work on this cemetery. Also, there are other qualities the cemetery has that I believe make it a good candidate for nomination. There has not been a burial in the cemetery about 137 years; one of the most recent was my ancestor who was a Civil War veteran.

It is true that the task is not easy and I may not be successful in my effort to have this cemetery placed on the historic register, but nevertheless I will try.

Whether or not the cemetery is ultimately placed on the register or not, the cemetery still needs to be cleaned up and maintained. I have enlisted the assistance of the local Sons of Confederate Veterans camp in Newberry County, who have expressed an interest in assisting with the restoration of this cemetery.

I tried to thank all of you individually for your valuable comments, but if I missed anyone, I thank you now. I am impressed by the number of those willing to help!

  Donna Jean Glasgow
