Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: ROOTS-L Digest V05 #590

OH MY, I was a late starter..sometime around 1990 when I was a kid of about
60.

My sister had been researching for much longer, but it wasn't until then
that she convinced me to get my feet wet.

My mother talked alot about her family (HINCK) so we knew a good deal about
them, but we didn't know my father's family at all (he died before I was
born). We decided that my sister would take the maternal line (NEWBERRY),
and I would take the paternal side (HISE).

I first went to the Family History Library near me and was shown the SSDI
(on CD at that time). I did know my father was from Missouri and, thank
heavens, Hise is a relatively rare name..found one entry that looked
possible, wrote for his death certificate and WOW! it was my uncle. Then
wrote to the church where he was buried and asked if the minister could give
me any information on the family.

A few weeks later I received a letter from a woman who said she was a niece
of my father...adding "think very carefully before pursuing this course, you
may learn some unexpected facts." AND, learn them I have...and addicted I
became. I now know my lineage back to 1800 and, of course am spending most
days trying to find who was my next gggggrandfather!!

An exciting find was a newspaper article headlined "HISE MURDER" in which it
was reported that, on his death bed, a man had confessed to the murder of my
father...and that was almost 10 years before I was born...don't believe
everything that's in print.
