Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: ROOTS-L Digest V05 #586

How old were you when you got started in genealogy? What got you started?

I was around 16 or 17 in US History class with an assignment to find out
where our ancestors came from, that was about 40 short years ago. I was
interested from then on. My father had inherited old family picture albums so I
always felt like I knew his family from the pictures and stories. I interviewed
aging relatives on my mother's side and asked about pictures I had
inherited, thank goodness I did this while they were still living. I got started on
the internet about 5 years ago and the world of genealogy has really opened up
for me, I have made contacts with so many family members I would never have
known. I was able to go to my gggrandparents graves in New York due to a
message board contact. I have received copies of pictures of ancestors I never
thought I would see. I have gained so much information from wonderful people
by way of the computer, information I never thought I would have. I love
reading through the census records, sending for and receiving pension records,
it brings my family to life in a way I can't describe. I still have several
brick walls but I have hopes that they will tumble down someday. I most
enjoy the new family members I have been able to meet through the research.
