Subject: [ROOTS-L] When did I start Genealogy?

About 12 years ago I started wondering about my husband's grandfather's birthplace and his parents. From there I thought about how little I knew about my own grandparents' background.

A friend of mine ran across a Gen. computer program that was reasonably priced so we each bought one and away I tried to go.

Knowing nothing about this type of research, AND nothing about the people I needed info for, it was a series of brick walls for a long time. All the people in both families were passed on. Sources were few and far between.

With the help of many kind souls I have managed to get the when, 1885 and 1887, also on which ships one set of grandparents came to the USA. But no luck in locating their points of origin. They did not come together.

The other set of grandparents I've traced back to 1700's and their birth place was Ireland. Have DOB but not specific location of such.

Other family lines go back to 1600's.

I work on this research very sporatically since I can sit at the computer for a very short time. But I am now 71 and still looking, whenever I can.

Family names are Lexa, Lexow, Levy, Cotner, Gortner, Shelton, Buchanan, Eagan, Eagen.

That's my story.

Jeanie, Barnhart, MO
