Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: Family search.org

Bill

No, you did not goof. It is just that in this case, with Hetherman, the first thing that comes up is the
1880 census. FamilySearch is simply offering people a way to see the original images if they choose. And,
pay for it. Think of this as the same thing as the "advertising" links on other web pages. Many people
subsidize their websites by putting in links to ancestry and other subscription sites, where people can
get additional information.

BUT, on the 1880 index with your Hetherman on it, you can click on "household" to get more information on
the household members. Then, you can move on to the neighbors. It doesn't give you as much information as
the original, but then, no index I've ever seen does. Thus the link to the original.

Please note, by the way, that the link to Ancestry specifically says: "View Original Image for a fee at
Ancestry.com."

Now, going below the census, there are IGI North America records. These can be individually sent in, in
which case you will see:

Record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. No additional information is available.
Ancestral File may list the same family and the submitter.

That means take this with a grain of salt (from Salt Lake?). There is no source listed, so it is only a
"clue" to work with.

Sometimes the notation is:
Form submitted by a member of the LDS Church. The form lists the submitter's name and address and may
include source information. The address may be outdated. Details vary. To find the form, you must know the
batch and sheet number.

In this case, you still have no record source, but you may find the contributor and get such from him/her.
Generally the addresses are out of date, but I've had some success with this.

And, of course, there is a SSDI for deaths in the US (sometimes), and Pedigree Resource Files, which are
on CDs which you can order from the LDS church. There are also ancestral files that you may find on some
people in the search. They are similar to the ones on the Pedigree Resource Files, but less complete.

Sometimes, you will get a message like:

Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are
usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date.

This is an example of records that were extracted by volunteers from churches, courthouses, etc., around
the world. Pretty good source, compared to the others mentioned above.

And, you may even find websites that are somehow linked (don't know the mechanism) to the FamilySearch.

But only the first one mentioned, the census, has a link to Ancestry.

Hope this helps.

Pat
