A possibility, or two, concerning the whereabouts of Joseph Rutledge in
South Carolina.

One extracted record involves a plat for Joseph RUTLEDGE, dated 1818.
The plat is for 120 acres on the Saluda River, Abbeville District.
Other names indexed in this record are Thomas DONALDSON, William DAVIS,
William WARE ( the surveyor), John MADDOX, and Thomas NORWOOD.

A Joseph RUTLEDGE is mentioned in the will of William RUTLEDGE, dated
1823, Laurens County, SC. Some of the other names indexed: Nelly
THOMPSON, Cornelius COOK (Sr. & Jr.)

As for the Thomas DONALDSON who died 1811, here are a couple to
consider:

Thomas DONAL_SON, 1768, plat for 100 acres in Craven County [District].
Locations cited are Broad River, Saluda River, Enoree River, and Duncans
Creek.

One Thomas DONALSON is also among the names indexed in a 1775 Craven
County [District] plat (Bush River).

Abbeville was created in 1785, from District Ninety-Six. Craven and
Ninety-Six were discontinued at some point. The history of
District/County creations may be worth knowing.

In the South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research:

"Tories Murdered in the South Carolina Upcountry in the Revolution"..."a
list of SC British sympathizers (Loyalists or Tories), found in the
Library of Congress transcripts of British Colonial Records"... "none of
these named fell in action, but were killed at their plantations, or
after they had been made prisoners..."

Russell RUTLEDGE
Joseph RUTLEDGE

The "upcountry" was considered the 96-District, southern part of Camden,
and upper part of Orangeburg.

Kermit Rutledge
