Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re:MAHANOY CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY AND NEWSPAPER PROJECT

I'm forwarding this information to the Rootsweb list as there may be descendants of former residents of the Mahanoy City, Pa., area who will be interested in this project.

This article below appears in today's Pottsville Republican, Pottsville, Pa., (Schuylkill County)........

One of the "jewels" of Mahanoy City is the Public Library located at 17-19 West Mahanoy Avenue. The building was built in 1906 and was the former Knights of Columbus Lodge.
Many of us spent many hours at the library researching school projects. The renovations will help bring patrons back to the library, especially the disabled and elderly. The elevator will open the first and second floor for further research and community activities.

The Library is also handling the Newspaper Project and is making renovations on the second floor for the newspaper archives.

      Your financial help is needed.....
The newspapers are the last written history of the Mahanoy City/Township area and are worth saving.
The newspaper archives of the Mahanoy Record and The Record American will be moved from the Shenandoah Evening Herald to the Mahanoy City Library and then either microfilmed or digitalized. The grant applications are a rather involved process and do not cover all of the costs such as the carpentry and electrical work to be installed, the labor for transporting the archives, costs of preparing and repairing the binders, and a multitude of cost factors too numerous to mention.

PLEASE consider donating to the project...your donation would be tax deductible as this is a non-profit organization.
Make your check payable to Newspaper Project, Mahanoy City Public Library and mail to
Mahanoy City Public Library, 17-19 W Mahanoy Ave, Mahanoy City, Pa 17948...attention: Peg Grigalonis.

      Many thanks,
      Shirley Ryan

            Group helps library

MAHANOY CITY - The sound of hammers slamming and power sanders buzzing filled the Mahanoy City Public Library on Thursday.
A group of 20 representatives from the Wal-Mart Distribution Center scheduled to open at Highridge on 81 Business Park in August were doing some community service.

No real renovation work has been done at the library in more than 15 years, said librarian Thomas E. Seiberling, and he developed a list of things the volunteers could do to improve the building that dates to 1909.

Camila Roces, Mahanoy City, a library patron, was impressed with the effort.

"I've grown up using this library," Roces said, "and I'm very grateful that they're willing to improve it and add to it."

"We're trying to reach out to some local groups," said Kathleen S. Snesavage, Lake Wynonah, who is one of the distribution center's operations managers. "We want to be a good corporate citizen to Schuylkill County."

Representatives of the Highridge Wal-Mart Distribution Center became aware of the library's needs when they visited the borough Feb. 9 and had a chance encounter with library board member Margarent G. "Peg" Grigalonis.

Seiberling and the board developed a list of about 40 jobs that could be done, and the group's goal was to accomplish 16 of them Thursday.

Wal-Mart and the library shared the cost of the project, Seiberling said.

John P. Gleisner, Branchdale, and Allan J. Glass, Pottsville, were refinishing a wood table on the front porch at the library, 17-19 W. Mahanoy Ave. Meanwhile, Preston A. Kriegshauser, Pottsville, was on a ladder winterizing seals around the air conditioner sticking out of a window.

Seiberling also had the circulation desk moved from the west side of the building to the south, near the main entrance, and a small wall was constructed there to shield the desk workers from the gusts that breeze in from the swinging door.

In the basement, Brad D. Wilkenson, Hazleton, and Richard B. Hall, Minersville, repaired the cellar steps and replaced the dry wall of the coal bin. Mark J. Valentine, Ringtown, and Corey D. Bierly, Minersville, were installing a new ceiling in a second-floor bathroom.

Meanwhile, approximately 30 framed pictures were being mounted throughout the library. Among them was a panoramic group picture of the Mahanoy City BPOE and guests taken at Lakeside on Aug. 22, 1912.

Recently, the library board has been making an effort on its own to renovate the building. Some ornate windows were restored in December, and the board is working to install an elevator on the east side of the building later this year.

Also on Thursday, seven Wal-Mart representatives helped out at a Red Cross blood drive at Cherish United Lutheran Church, 437 Airport Road.
