Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: sharing of information - legalities

This is and interesting topic.

As a start, I don't think anyone has a right to protect factual
information about themselves. There are plenty of businesses that are
only too willing to sell information about living individuals in the
US.

Even if you have copyrighted a web site or other work that contains
the information, the copyright will only protect the presentation and
original material (like stories and such) that you created. The
underlying facts about the individuals are not protected.

No one needs permission to publish facts about individuals -- living
or dead. And facts would include most of the information that
genealogists search for.

So even if you take precautions for your compilations, you might find
your information out there on the Internet.

I think that's just the way it is these days. The Internet has just
brought it out in the open.
