WorldConnect and I assume the Ancestry side of the same large shared
database have mechanisms for removing people from the databases submitted.
Another option is for people first "clean" their databases within their own
genealogy program before submitting them anyplace online. In fact I think
most of the large databases do a pretty good job of cleaning.

In the past the databases on genealogy.com were from the FTM submissions
that go on their cds that they sell, and I thought these were pretty well
cleaned before they were burned to the cds. I do believe there is an option
to get the submitters names if we are talking about the same submissions.
You might need to call them if it is not obvious on their website.

My guess is that it may not be worth the time and effort to get what you
do not like removed. But then it may depend on how much personal
information is there -- lots of things about the living? or say just a
birth date and place which isn't likely to do harm.

There is a lot of information in the public domain -- city directories,
obituaries, birth announcements, marriage announcements, and anyone can take
and put those in a database. Whether we like it or not or whether its use
is in good judgment, I'm not sure there is any logical way one could keep
people from using public information about living people. I believe FindUSA
has now been withdrawn from libraries, but one could find names, addresses,
dob, financial material, lots of other information before it disappeared a
few weeks back. Private industries, etc. still have access to all kinds of
personal material and most of us can find out anything for a fee should we
really be determined.

All of us should be sensitive to respecting the privacy of others and
posting information about the living online. But it is not illegal to post
names with birth dates and locations in my opinion.
