Subject: [ROOTS-L] Researching back in time
Sender: roots-in@roots-l.rootsweb.com

Many of us reached the point where we have immigrant ancestors traced
back to early New England. Either we have done this ourselves, or we have
found someone who shared the line. But how does one go back further into
England or other countries when one cannot travel to search themselves?
Much of the pre-immigrant ancestor information in shared databases is
suspect.

Excellent sources for new material of good quality are some of the
premier genealogical magazines/periodicals which generally are published
quarterly. Most libraries with genealogy collections susbscribe to several
of these. It never hurts to go to the shelves, pick up the recent issues
and read through the tables of contents. One never knows what they will
find this way. Obviously an occasional glance may not turn up anything
hopeful, but you never know when a particular surname will spark your
curiousity as you scan the tables of contents.

As an example, just a few days ago I received the Jan. volume of the
NEHGR (New England Historical and Genealogical Register). These issues
generally have some articles outlining new research by qualified
researchers. Some issues I find little of interest. But this time out of 9
articles, I found one extending back in time one of my direct lines (Stephen
GATES) and four others that had information on other families where I had
some information in my database.

So for those of you who are able to get out and to your local library
for research, you may be surprised what good quality research you may be
able to access. Photocopy the articles of interest, and you may find
several hours worth of new information to add to your genealogy database.

For those of you who cannot get out, it would not hurt to occasionally
query a list as to what might be included in a particular volume of a
periodical you are interested in. While the listings on table of contents
pages cannot be published to a rootsweb list without retyping, anyone can
receive an attachment to personal email of a quickly scanned page.
