Subject: [ROOTS-L] Newspaper Date of Death

The question about whether a newspaper actually puts the date of death into
the obituary can only be answered by saying this:
Some do and some don't.
The only way to know the date of death for certain is to get the death
certificate from the vital records office. If you saw it in the obituary
you could only treat this as a derivative source since it would be second
hand.
The web site for the index to Cleveland Plain Dealer has a description on
how to get the obituary from the Cleveland Public Library but there is a fee
for this service. If I recall I was able to pay for the obituary via credit
card and they would email the obituary in scanned form.
If not there is a mailing address to send funds and get copies.
