I also have a small problem with place of death, in Scotland. My ancestor, James McILVENA was deceased before the 1861 UK Census (Monkland, Airdrie) according to the marriage register of his son, Hugh in 1866 at Rawyards, New Monkland. The Free West Church in Airdrie, to which they belonged, burned down and the documents were lost, supposedly as it was before they were required to send all documents to Edinburgh. I know my James was married to Margaret Ayre (m.s.) but when or where I do not know. I also know from 1861, '71' Censuses that he was born in Ireland. The names Ballymena, Antrim swirl around in our family lore, but nothing has yet been proven.
How can I find out for sure where he died, when he died exactly, and where he was born and married. I have been puzzling over this lot for about 5 years or more!!
Thanks to anyone with UK search tips.
            Marilyn

The discussion about how to properly name places got me to thinking
  about a related question.

When the place where the person died is different than their last
place of residence, which do you use as the place of death.

For example, a person goes to a hospital that is in a different town
and perhaps a different county from where they live. Then they die in
  the hospital.

Or perhaps they die while travelling in another country.

Is there a standard on which to use?

I don't know if there is a standard. One of the facts I use is "Residence
at Death". I really can't imagine that anyone will be interested in the name
of the hospital but I may be wrong. Perhaps you could add a fact "Place of
Death" and then the name of the hospital or country in which the person died.
