Subject: [ROOTS-L] RE: Price of Census Reels

ANSWER TO BELOW:

Marian and Elizabeth,
Where do you buy?
You can purchase them direct from NARA, I believe the cost was about $37 or
so about 2 years ago. Make sure you have the correct Reel Numbers. Be sure to
check NARA for current prices and ordering information.

Why do you want to buy?
I found my family Immigration records in Ancestry but the manifest itself
was not on line at that time (not sure if it is now or not). Was unable to find
any copy of this Reel anywhere. Even the LDS in Salt Lake did not have it.

So, to verify the written data, I ordered the Reel from NARA. The
immigration date was November 1849 and they landed in New Orleans. Yes, the whole
family were there. Possibly the lack of the manifest itself being on line plus no
reel being found even in Salt Lake was due to the port of entry.

Truthfully no one could have been more surprised than myself in finding that
a family that was in Illinois in the 1850 Census, with 3 small children,
landed in November 1849 in New Orleans. Just goes to again prove.....don't rule
anything out....the impossible happens (grin).

Hope this answers both of your questions, Gretchen

Why do you want to buy them? It is undoubtedly cheaper to join one of the
online services, unless your ISP is very erratic. Or renting them at a
Family History Center. You asked for cheaper <G> and sorry but the price of
a reel left me breathless <G>
