Subject: [ROOTS-L] Sharing Data (Was: Losing Data)

Last year, two of my aunts asked me to print out the
family tree info I had compiled in my FTM program. I
told them I wasn't nearly finished but they didn't
want to wait.

I kept delaying while madly adding more data. They
kept calling, saying they were so excited, they
couldn't wait.

I set up a report in my FTM then exported it (or
copied - I can't remember which) to Word. It was over
500 pages. For each report.

So, I went in and deleted my sources. (They didn't
care about them, they just wanted to see the names &
info). Then I realized they wouldn't understand the
little numbers next to the names such as John5,
James4, Adam3, Robert2, Henry1. (I can't make the
numbers tiny but you get the drift). So, I went in
under every entry with the small numbers and typed in
the relationship to the 1st ancestor. (Such as, "John,
great great grandson of Henry; James, great grandson
of Henry; Adam, etc etc)

I made those changes from the beginning to the end of
the report. UGH!

When I was finally finished, one of my aunts called
and asked for an EXTRA copy for another relative. So
now, I had to print out 3 of everything. I can't
remember how many pages but it was over 400. Each. I
wanted to suggest my aunt make the extra copy herself
but she didn't have alot of extra money for something
like this.

I also had pictures I had scanned. I printed those.

I think I changed my black ink cartridge twice. Two
of my color cartridges had to be changed as well. I
can't remember exactly - it was awhile ago and I try
to block out that part.

I bought binders and printed out a cover for each. I
also used dividers.

When I was finished assembling everything, I boxed
them up into 2 boxes (my aunts live in different
states) then stood in line at the post office to mail
them. Postage wasn't cheap either.

Finally, they received the binders. I found out
because I asked about a week after mailing them, not
because either one told me they had received them.

A few months later, I was talking with one of my aunts
about an ancestor. I told her I had a picture of his
gravestone and she said she would love to have it. I
told her it was in the binder and she said, "What
binder?" I reminded her and she said, "Oh yes, that's
right. I haven't looked at it yet."

!!

As of last month, the binders have yet to be opened.
One aunt told me she was glad to have it and would
read it "one day".

This aunt knows I've adding hundreds of ancestors
since printing out the report. She asked for a
revised report. I told her I'd be happy to but I
wouldn't be able to print it out - I'd email it to her
and she could print it. (She didn't have a computer
previously). Well, that was the end of that request!
