Subject: [ROOTS-L] Backing up data

Whenever I make changes to my database, I back up the file on my hard drive.
Every 3 days I burn a CD to place the updated database onto my other
computer.
Every Sunday afternoon I burn a new CD and put it in my car. I carry it in
the car until I stop at my mother's early in the week, and then I store it at
her home.
This is easier and more readily accessible than a safe deposit box. I also
send various GEDCOMs of family lines that I update to other members of my
family. My sister never opens them but she stores them on her hard drive for me.
I have not submitted my data to any online database at this point in time
and do not anticipate doing so. Well I did once. And someone took the
information and changed facts and used it to apply to the DAR, so my hopes were
dashed as the DAR refused to consider my application since another member had
already PROVEN her lineage, even though she removed a generation from my lineage
in order to make hers fit. Was mine incorrect - No, that is borne out by
several other researchers and in print in the NEHGR and other places.
So no online databases for me. People prefer to simply take it without doing
any work themselves and then claim it as their own. I know that will
create a firestorm of people on the list telling me that I am selfish and wrong,
but since we can not protect our own research, and people can do with it what
they want, I will not share on a public forum. Pretty hard to write a book
about your genealogy (which I am doing) when others mess around with your data.
If anyone wants my info, they simply need to ask and a GEDCOM is gladly
provided.

Again my back up solution is keeping copies in other places. And yes, on
paper too, although my 19,000 person database no longer makes printing
practical.

So if your genealogy, pictures and other data is important, BACK IT UP
on several media, and have some backups in places other than your home.
With genealogy databases make both gedcom files and backup files. Also,
people should check out their backups occasionally as we have all heard of
people who thought they were backing up only to find out the backups were
not good when they were needed.
