Not to sound "stupid" but.... JUST LEAVE IT!

You mentioned how this gown has been handed down and the stories that go 
with it. Why try to remove one of the stories.

I think a few generations from now the story about how Aunt soandso used 
glue to fix it will be something for them all to smile about!

Do the repairs that the glue didn't work for, but leave the glue there. 
Maybe add some "decoration" around it to take the eye away from it, but 
I think it will be of a sentimental value to keep the gown in its 
"original" form.
