Hi Les,

When I wrote my original email, I didn't word it
correctly. My concern with entering city/county/state
in FTM is when the current info is different from when
the event (birth/marriage/death) actually happened.
Especially county changes. Also, I thought the
changes happened when WV seceded but I was wrong.

Here's an example of what I meant about the counties
changing:

Ohio County was formed in 1776

Brooke County was formed from Ohio County in 1796;
Hancock County was formed from Brooke County in 1848;
Tyler County was formed from Ohio County in 1814;
Wetzel County was formed from Tyler County in 1846;
and Marshall County was formed from Ohio County in
1835.

So, let's say I have an ancestor born in Ohio County
in 1780 - however, the area she was born is now
considered Tyler County. If I were to enter the info
as Ohio County, I won't remember it's now Tyler.

Actually I think part of the information that you
are quoting is from wrong information. The county
names remained the same when West Virginia became a
state. There have been more counties formed from
those over the years just as there were many counties
formed from the original one or two while it was a
part of Virginia.

The records can be found in the county that existed at
the time of the event if they were recorded. You can
determine when each county was formed and from what
county or counties it was formed from by looking at
the table for the link of counties at the following
page:

In recording events, one should always use the name of
the location as it was at the time the event occurred.
