I was going to tell you to go to the museum but you have already tried  that.
One of the foremost authorities on lace, is Martha Pullen, of Alabama. She  
publishes a magazine on needlework and appears on PBS. Her web site is 
_www.MarthaPullen.com_ (http://www.MarthaPullen.com) .  She would be  the person to 
contact.
 
Based on my experience with lace sewing, it might be possible to cut the  
lace form the fabric and insert entredeux between the lace and the fabric by a  
technique known as French lace sewing.
