Subject: [ROOTS-L] Warning about relying strictly on external harddrives

A caveat about using external harddrives for files. I had placed ALL my data, photos, and backups on an external harddrive USB that was less than a year old and never gave me any problems - until that is - I reformatted my computer harddrive and went to hook the external harddrive back up. In cleaning and moving my system around the external harddrive was shook too hard and stopped working. So there I sat with years of records not on the computer main drive and the external harddrive with all the back-up data now a paperweight.

I checked with several tech people who said it would be a couple hundred dollars to fix the external harddrive (which I do not have as I am unemployed) so for many months I started to rebuild the data and periodically did the old hit the external harddrive and hoped it would work. Well eventually it decided to work again and I was able to transfer the items to CD.

While the external harddrive is an excellent source to save memory on the main system, it is possible to lose data. I now use a new external harddrive as backup AND make a quick copy on the CD. It may be an extra bothersome step, but much better than having to beg people to resend info (if you are lucky and they are still alive) and go back to all those internet sites and download hundreds and hundreds of items.

Chances are slim that you will lose data on both drives - but it can happen. CDs can also be placed in safe deposit boxes or sent to other relatives in case a fire or flood hits your house unexpectantly.

  -stephen
