Subject: [ROOTS-L] Help with a christening gown

I hope this message is acceptable to the list. I am in desperate need of
help with a christening gown. My sister-in-law, in the last 2-3 years,
saw fit to try to repair a 105 year old christening gown with super
glue. The gown has tine, vertical panels of lace, interspersed with fabric
on the yoke of the gown. The lace separated from the fabric, so she used
the super glue to mend it. She not only got the glue on the front, but
since she had folded it at the shoulder seams, there is some on the back
yoke. The gown itself is of lightweight cotton.

I have not attempted anything to get the glue out as of yet. A museum
wasn't able to help, and the glue company recommended acetone. Does
anyone on the list have any ideas?

The gown was made for my grandmother who was born in 1901, supposedly by
her aunts. We can document 31 babies baptized in the gown. Two sets of
twins have been born, so the parents chose the oldest twin to use the
gown. My son would like his son to use the gown, but I am afraid to use it
in this condition.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Judith A. Brown
