Triple A Auto club has Maps   If you are a member you call them and give your club Membership number  and they will send to you or go to the nearest office and pick them up  New Maps every few years to show new routes of highways.

the other thing I do is go to library book sales and watch for OLD maps and
atlases. The newer ones are nice but if you are back far enough you want
maps of that era - not current one.

Germany: Check your local library for atlases - make copies of those maps
you really need (if not too large).
I just place maps of Germany 1850 in Google (or use your own favorite search
engine) and a bunch came up ... among them
