Subject: [ROOTS-L] Memories"round The Mill

  Oklahoma Territory

By 1898 my Great Grandfather DAVID JESSE (JESS) HOLLADAY and one of his KAY cousins had been working in Oklahoma Territory for several years before the Land run. They had come from Tina, Missouri.
It was the 18 day of April 1898 that President WILLIAM MCKINNEY signed the deed of a homestead located about 5 miles south of Banner, Oklahoma to DAVID J. HOLLIDAY. (Note the spelling of the name HOLLADAY was spelled HOLLIDAY on the Land deed. After that the family spelled their name HOLLIDAY. The home stead was located South East Quarter of Section Seven in township eleven north of Range six West of Indian Meridian in Oklahoma Territory containing one hundred and sixty acres. The homestead certificate No. 2873, Application 324. Recorded Vol. 28, page 357. DAVID JESSE HOLLIDAY was 40 years old when he homesteads that farm. His wife ELLA VENORA (BIBLE) HOLLIDAY was age 37.
When JESS & ELLA HOLLIDAY and three of their four children TINA VIOLENTA age 6, BLONDEL BASIL age 4 and Orval Kay (O.K.) HOLLIDAY was born in July of 1889 came to live in a dug out. They were still living in the dug out when my Grand Father O.K. Holliday was four years old. There is a picture of the Dug Out and the family in the Book ¡°Meet The Holladay¡¯s¡± and ¡°Daniel Boone and You¡± by Paul Odle.
Ella Venora Holliday kept a wood fire going inside the Dug Out with water boiling at all times to scald snakes. Ella was a crack shot; she knew which riffle to pick up to shoot the different predators. Ella was a Descendant of SQUARE BOONE and SARAH MORGAN BOONE, Daniel Boone¡¯s parents. Ella had a special box that contained letters from Daniel Boone. She treasured that box. Some one thought GLADYS WHITE one of Tina¡¯s daughters got that box after Ella died. Our family descends from Daniels sister MARY BOONE that married WILLIAM BRYAN. Ella and her children got their dark skin and eyes from the Boone Family.
When O.K. Holliday was about 4 or 5 years old Ella had him with her as she traded for supplies at the old FORT RENO trading Post. My grandpa Holliday was so dark skinned that two old Indian Squaws started walking off with him they thought he was a little Indian boy with a white lady. Ella was tugging on one arm and the two Indian ladies¡¯ were pulling on the other arm.
Jess Holladay died in 1937. I was four years old. My father and mother Jake and Hazel (Holladay) Odle and my brother Orville Lester (Buddy) and I moved in with Ella That year. I was 16 years old when my Great Grandma Ella Holliday died. She had been bed fast for 12 years; Her three children took turns caring for her. When I lived on her farm with her some one gave me a baby goat. My brother Bud, Grandma Holliday & I loved to push our butts in the goats face and he would butt us!
